The Kent State University Massacre: Causes, Unfolding, and Consequences

On May 4th, 1970, a tragedy occurred at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. After days of unrest and protests against the Vietnam War, and the federal government's decision to invade Cambodia, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on a group of unarmed student protesters. In a matter of minutes, four students were killed and nine were injured. Causes

Prior to the massacre, anti-war sentiment was rampant in the United States. Student activists across the country had been protesting against American involvement in Vietnam for several years. On April 30th, 1970, President Nixon announced the decision to invade Cambodia, further deepening anti-war sentiment among students. The students refused to leave and instead started throwing rocks and other objects at the National Guard members. The Guard responded by firing their guns in an attempt to disperse the crowd. In just 13 seconds, 67 shots were fired and four students lay dead or dying on the ground.

Consequences
